Adventures by Disney Portugal: Why This Was One of the Most Surprising Trips I've Ever Taken

When most people think of Portugal, they picture colorful cities, historic castles, and beautiful beaches. Those things certainly delivered, but what surprised me most was how much deeper we were able to experience the country through Adventures by Disney.  This wasn't a trip where we simply checked famous landmarks off a list. Instead, it was filled with authentic local experiences, incredible storytelling, and special moments that would have been difficult to arrange on our own.

Sintra: A Fairytale Come to Life
One of the highlights of the journey was visiting the breathtaking Pena Palace in Sintra. Sitting high above the clouds, the palace looks like something straight out of a storybook. On the morning we visited, the fog rolled through the hills, creating an almost magical atmosphere that made the experience even more memorable.

Standing at the Edge of Europe
At Cabo da Roca, we stood at the westernmost point of continental Europe. Looking out across the Atlantic Ocean, it was easy to imagine the Portuguese explorers who once sailed into the unknown from these very shores.

The dramatic cliffs, crashing waves, and endless ocean views made this one of the most powerful stops on the itinerary.

Hands-On Experiences That Bring Portugal to Life
One of the things I loved most about Adventures by Disney was how often we were invited to become part of the experience rather than simply observe it.

During a traditional cheesemaking demonstration, we learned about local techniques that have been passed down through generations. We didn't just watch—we participated, laughed, and gained a greater appreciation for Portuguese culture.

Later, we visited a tile workshop where artisans demonstrated the craftsmanship behind Portugal's famous azulejos. Creating our own tile designs gave us a new appreciation for an art form found throughout the country.

These are the kinds of experiences that transform a vacation into a genuine cultural journey.

Portugal's Incredible Food Scene
Portugal quickly earned a place among my favorite culinary destinations.

From fresh seafood overlooking the Atlantic Ocean to world-famous Pastéis de Nata, every meal seemed to tell a story about the region we were visiting.

One of my favorite moments was enjoying lunch with a spectacular ocean view while watching waves crash against the coastline below.

And yes, the famous Portuguese custard tarts absolutely lived up to the hype.

The Algarve: Portugal's Hidden Gem
The Algarve coastline may have been the biggest surprise of the entire trip.

Crystal-clear water, dramatic limestone cliffs, sea caves, and hidden coves created scenery that rivaled any destination I've visited around the world.

Exploring the coastline by boat allowed us to see spectacular rock formations and caves that simply can't be appreciated from land.

It's easy to understand why so many travelers fall in love with this region.
